For anywhere from just a few dollars to about $20 or $30 you can pick up something known as a do-it-yourself divorce kit. You can often find them in book stores, department stores and stationary stores next to similar kits for making our your Will, lease or other legal document. They may look like a book or a package like an envelope. These do-it-yourself divorce kits typically contain almost every form you may conceivably need, or a disk or CD containing these forms. They also contain instructions describing what forms you need in each jurisdiction for each different set of circumstances. Court offices even sometimes offer similar kits for a small fee and some web sites offer to sell you the forms for a particular jurisdiction along with some generic instructions.
If you have a great deal of time and patience, using these do-it-yourself divorce kits may save you up to a couple of hundred dollars. However, many intelligent people become frustrated after hours of trying to follow all the instructions about which forms to use, how to fill them out, and what to do with them once you do. If saving $200 is worth all your spare time for several days and you don’t mind the delay that will cause in getting your divorce, and you don’t mind the risk of further delay should the court staff tell you that you filled out the wrong forms or the right forms improperly, then you might want to try a do-it-yourself divorce kit.
If the choice were just between using a do-it-yourself divorce kit and hiring a lawyer, then the potential savings in using a kit would be far more than $200. However, another viable alternative is using a professional divorce document assembly service. If you need legal advice or there are issues which remain in dispute and can only be settled in court, by all means you should hire a lawyer. But if a lawyer is not needed, why pay lawyer fees?

Hi i’ve been trying to apply for my divorce , to fill out the papers then to print them.I’ve gone to Ontario Superior Court Of Justace and still cannot get the free divorce kit. I am on a prov. Disability and cannot afford to go through a lawyer. Please help if you can . I will be sep. 1 yr as of July 31st 2008 Thank You Marilyn Bell
